Countdown to Beta

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

As Web Designer at The Wenatchee World, I’ve been scrambling to redesign the entire website over the past two months. The powers-that-be have determined that Monday (two days from now), we’ll be pulling back the curtains so the public can take a look at where we are so far.
That means that I’m working overtime this weekend to make sure any major problems are addressed before then. Just found one, for example, that breaks the site for users using Internet Explorer - which is about 70% of our users.
Could be a stressful 48 hours. Check how I’m doing come Monday night.

The economy: close to home

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

For the first time in 104 years, my employer, The Wenatchee World, laid off employees last Friday. A terribly sad and stressful day, which may explain in part why I pulled a muscle in my back on Friday before work.
I dodged the bullet this time, but twelve co-workers were not as fortunate - some with more than 30 years with the company. I’ve been there before, first time in 2002 when my entire department was ushered into a room and immediately laid off.
My thoughts and prayers go with each of these good men and women who begin this week looking for work.
